Continued:

The beginnings of the butterfly knife are said to move back to 800 AD and were used as weapons in the Philippines first. The concept of flipping open a knife, then storing it for better carrying was the main development that was in the make of these knives. During World War II, this concept became even more popular, with the adoption of Balisong knives being given to U.S. troops that were coming home from the Philippines. The movement of this design into America then led into different materials and tools that provided more convenience of use for the knives.

There are two main types of butterfly knives that are used. The first is known as the sandwich construction and includes layers in the handle that is pinned together. When the knife closes, it 'sandwiches' between the pins that are in the handle. The second type of knife is known as a channel. Instead of having several layers for the knife to rest in, there is one main slot that the knife sets in to create ease of use.

With the different concepts in knives available, are some that have moved from ancient methods and into present day innovations. One of the most common known knives are the butterfly knives. From the evolution and migration of this particular knife is the ability for this particular knife to move into the main stream and into a convenient use of the tool for everyday needs.
