Emerson knives began in the 1980s through the founder, Ernest Emerson. Emerson was trained in the martial arts and in defense. While he was studying the martial arts, he was required to use a knife for protection. Because he could not afford this, he decided to make a custom knife that would carry the same prestige through practice. It was from this initial concept that Emerson Knives was launched, beginning with the building of the brand in 1996. Today, the knife brand is used by the Navy Seals, NASA and those that are involved in combat and defense as a profession. Emerson Knives has also merged with Gerber Knives to provide all combat type knives.

The first models Emerson knives put on the market were based on martial arts that were being studied. This included a combination of stones and materials that were considered more exotic for knives, such as shell and hardwoods. This was combined with the Damascus steel blade design, known for their straighter edge. This led into his first set of knives, known as the Bowie Knife, used specifically for combat. Emerson then grew this into Viper Knives, used for blade fighting and Specwar Knives, which are used for combat.
